Unlock Happiness and Creativity by Moving your Body

We often find a reason not to exercise especially when it is cold. At the same time, we know that keeping the body moving is good for us – our health and well-being, weight or stress management, increased creativity, or even enhanced mood.

Scientific studies demonstrate that when we exercise we release a chemical reaction that produces the sensation we term, happiness. The first is the production of dopamine, our stores are being depleted as we age and the best way to increase these stores is through exercise. These neurotransmitters in the brain are necessary for feelings of pleasure and happiness.

We also know that moving the body releases endorphins, the quintessential feel-good chemicals found in our brains. So from a scientific perspective,e there is a good reason, and some say an addictive reason, to exercise.

Apart from these benefits, we also know that exercise can energise us, reduce stress levels and ease anxiety, seemingly accessing the intuitive part of the brain, and assisting in problem-solving, with many an “a-ha” moment occurring on a morning or evening walk.

It could be said it can influence or even change our perception of a situation or enable us to see or think about it differently.

Let's Put Your Body in Motion

Here are some simple things you can do to keep your body moving:

  • When you wake, take a few moments before you get out of bed to stretch your body, tap into the things you are grateful for, and set an intention for a fantastic day
  • Make time throughout the day to do something you love, that will give you activity, e.g  a yoga class, a walk in the garden/natural surroundings or even take the time to walk to your next meeting (take the stairs) or if you can, leave the car at home
  • Be mindful of your breathing, not only in your morning meditation, catch yourself through the day and breathe in deeply
  • Drink more water, not only does the increase of water mean more trips to the bathroom but it also assists in the cleansing of the system and supports the internal organs
  • When you are on the computer throughout the day, you are often in a static position, take a few minutes to roll your shoulders, and your neck and wriggle/stretch your fingers
  • Put some music on when you are preparing dinner, and enjoy cooking while dancing to your favourite music
  • Book in a massage, this is a wonderful way to detox, soothe muscles and relax the body and a great “treat” to work towards with your new health regime

So if you want to do something about bringing more movement into your life and you haven’t been moving for a while, the key is to keep it simple, and enjoyable and take it in small steps.

The biggest hurdle is to make time for yourself and then find something you enjoy: be it walking, running, yoga, swimming, bike riding, pole dancing, dancing or even a day of shopping (although window shopping if you are looking after your budget), the key is consistency and keeping that body moving!
