Choice Requires Some Control: Horary Astrology and the Freedom to Choose

I love this quote by Costa Rican Astrologer Ana Luisa Monge-Naranjo:

"So why is a prediction by a market researcher acceptable while a prediction by an Astrologer is considered a violation of free will?"[1]

When we embark on business, it is our duty to work out what our competitors are up to, where our supply chains will support us best, and as much about our prospective customers as we can, to make sure our offers will be accepted. These customers are usually not in our circle of close friends for most businesses, at least they aren’t until they become regular customers.  So how do we find out about them? What their dreams are. What they dislike.  Would they welcome us and our offerings into their worlds? There are many ways these questions are answered in business as you know.

In our individual lives also, we have something sacred to take care of, and a sacred journey of Life to Live. So why wouldn’t we want to ensure some control over our own Lives to the extent that will allow us to walk the paths we choose, and meet the people who enrich those paths?

I did not choose Horary Astrology lightly. Things can seem very mystical when any of us encounter many of the modalities presented here on SoulAdvisor. Once we become familiar with these we begin to realise that the more we learn, the more we needed only to look in a certain direction to demystify, and often evidence, how all these things are possible through our own mind/body/spirit we each Know as Our Self, and how we are interconnected with each other.

I now use Horary Astrology alongside my Hypnotherapy and other Counselling modalities, and other Astrology services. When it comes to Astrology I have to stop myself from providing an avalanche of information from your Natal Chart – two books worth easy! The Natal Chart has to be with you and encompass your whole Life!  The Horary Chart, however, is focused on a specific question at a specific time.

A Sample Horary Astrology Chart

Just like Business Marketing intel might highlight to us that one of our competitors is running a profit-loss campaign designed to price cut us out of the marketplace, (which they will recoup with price rises once we are out), Horary can give us answers that allow us to make informed decisions. Horary can highlight key points about our questions, which we can then choose to pay attention to. Having more knowledge about a situation is to have more control over the outcome of that challenge.

Control is a Basic Need. Control requires Knowledge. We know that it was our choices that brought about the conclusion, and not some undefinable fatalism, or ignorance, when we plan and prepare. With more knowledge comes more choice, more freedom.

Consider Tim (we’ll call him Tim), a man in his thirties who experienced a traumatic incident around partnerships in his twenties.  Whenever Tim gets very close to a woman now, his trauma sets in, and he ends the partnership before it has a chance to begin. Tim wants to find out if his current relationship will cause him pain if he pursues it further. As we talk more, it is clear to Tim and I that we will want to process out his trauma first. Horary is not our first step here. Although if the question is posed correctly, Horary could, potentially, have drawn Tim's and my attention to the trauma around his question. We could also highlight a lot of this using transit charts against his Natal chart. In my practice, I like to include Astrology because it can often save us time when issues aren’t so clear. However, in this case, Tim and I will shift the trauma first, utilizing hypnotherapy.

What can Tim do now the trauma is gone? What basis of information has he now got to work with, now that the context of his repetitive relationship issues are no longer relevant? Tim has dealt with the trauma, but Tim now wants to find some meaning, some other new patterns he can put in place. This is all a part of the consultation process and it is easy to be surprised by how many tools there are available to us when we simply ask!

Let’s consider Tim’s current relationship. Each of us is very different. This lady is her own unique individual. Tim doesn’t have her birth data, and doesn’t feel comfortable asking for it at this early stage. But he is keen to see where this might take him. He is much more confident about pursuing this new relationship as a very different, stronger Tim now! At this point he has a definite, sincere, well thought out question. And it is at this point where Horary can come into its own.

Horary is ancient. It has been used to strategize wars and court cases. It has answered missing things and missing people questions, as well as business merger questions, and many more.

When we looked at Tim’s Horary about his current relationship, we discovered a potential character trait of his Lady that Tim found fascinating. Of course, the only way Tim was going to discover more was to choose to embark upon the relationship. And when he did, he discovered much, much, more, and still is as they enjoy each new anniversary together.

Control as a Basic Need, The Lack of Which Can Lead Us Into Troubled Times

It might not be controversial to say that every challenge we face will have something to do with us seeking to meet one or more of our Basic Needs. This is not to say that each of us are needy and selfish, although without enough Knowledge of Self it is a pretty easy trap for any of us to fall into.

“When we have a need, any need, we are compelled to meet it – often unconsciously.” Mark Tyrrell[2]

Here is a list of Basic Needs to put this into context:

  • Attention – we all want to be seen and heard
  • Safety – we all want food, water and a place where we can rest peacefully
  • Control – if you have no control, you cannot exercise your free will
  • Intimacy – we all want someone we can share with at this deep level
  • Connection – our interconnectedness with others is primary to all of us
  • Status – we all want to play a role in our communities and share our skills
  • Challenge – the impulse to co-create our world and grow is strong in each of us
  • Mind and Body – we all seek the harmony of mind and body for wholistic health
  • Meaning – our lives must stand for something in some way that we can feel that Life itself is important, and our role and everyone else’s role is sacred

And here is another quote from ‘The Dark Side of Human Needs’ by Psychology Educator and Hypnotherapist Mark Tyrrell[2]:

Five simple steps to becoming a successful dictator

  1. Take one group, or nation, of people who don’t feel much control
  2. Raise the anger and bitterness levels to a greater pitch.  Slowly bring to the boil.
  3. Sprinkle in some emotionally arousing promises of reclaiming dignity and control
  4. Add a dash of expectation that your system will give the people greater control (and therefore dignity and status).
  5. Finally, serve up your own power and take control from the very ones you promised it to.

If we consider Jekyll Island and the resultant currency (that became the primary gateway to accessing all Basic Needs), we can see that some people in our world today have successfully attained full control over the life, death and enslavement of billions of people.

“…neoclassical economics implicitly accepts the Self-sale contract” [3]

Sun Tzu taught us that if we Know Thy Self and Know Others, we will win 100% of any opposition[4]. His Doctrine is a Doctrine of War, but like most things, a Doctrine of Peace operates the same way, but with noble intentions, and commitment to the Value of Every Individual.

When people are convinced that they have no control over things in their lives that affect their access to their basic needs, then we know these people are ‘demoralized’. And from this position they will, even unconsciously, grasp at any offer of fulfilment by any cult, or gang, or anyone purporting authority, that happens into their orbit.

It sounds like Control is a very important Basic Need for all of us. Control requires Knowledge for it to exist in any situation, where it can facilitate our Free Will to choose and to grow through our choices.

Knowledge From Where?

What’s the first thing you notice when you embark on some new course, or some new project, or some new place to visit?  Is there an element of strangeness about it all? Maybe some confusion? Do you feel in control jumping on a train in a foreign city before you know where that train will take you? Knowing where the train will take you does not diminish the enjoyment of uncertainty when you get there, but it does allow you to choose to go where you want to get to! This is a relatively easy one to gain knowledge of, well, some of you might disagree if you can’t speak the language and there are no clear diagrams. But for many sources of knowledge we have to access the keys before we can even get on the train where the knowledge itself might open up to us! We might think it impossible to learn the language today, when we need it, or perhaps we think we might never find a way in time.

Oh. Look over there! I can see an information kiosk and one of the languages is English! Now we can look where all the trains are heading and maybe we can change our mind about where we want to go now also, because there is even more information available to us, right here, right now!

Presently, many people feel overwhelmed and confused, wondering if clarity is even possible. Many are frightened by what’s happening in our world. Many are frightened about health issues they don’t comprehend. Some are frightened by spiritual issues they don’t comprehend. Some are fearful of entering into meditation or healing techniques for fear of what they might find. Some are fearful they won’t have a roof over their heads, and know no way to control their lives to ensure the safety and growth of their families. Many look to others to paternally care for them, as they sometimes drop to their knees tired and beaten. Who reading this has not felt this at least once in the last five years? Maybe you haven’t. But many of us have.

“There are no losers, only Quitters”

I have no idea who to attribute this saying to, but we all know it.

What many of us probably don’t know is a great deal of information about ourselves!

We can’t fulfil our need for Control without Knowledge.

A fascinating book titled ‘The Master and His Emissary’, by Iain McGilchrist, provides a wealth of evidence about how you and I are put together[5]. Drawing mostly from medical research in Biology and Psychology, as well as Philosophy, McGilchrist lets us in on some amazing insights about us.  Most of us who connect with SoulAdvisor have had many experiences with Meditation and other Healing Modalities found offered by Practitioners through this website. But have you ever wondered why so much of this actually works? It is often wonderful simply to enjoy and tap into the Mysteries of Life without analyzing them. But if it means that you can’t learn more because you never make important discoveries that help you know yourself, then you may be missing some amazing opportunities. You might then continue to be confused over which way the trains run! The answer may be there for you, waiting.

Here are just two quotes from this book to entice you to illustrate this.

“According to [Philosopher] Edmund Husserl the roots of the European crisis of modernism lay in ‘verirrenden rationalismus’ and ‘blindheit fur das transzendentale’, a sort of mad rationalism and a blindness to the transcendental.” [5]

Oh, is he talking about things like meditation and alternative healing and energy work? Actually, this author is coming from a foundational biological paradigm that looks at the brain itself. Specifically, how the left and right hemispheres operate differently. If the left hemisphere is damaged, then the right hemisphere can do all the work.  But it seems that it doesn’t quite work out the same if the right hemisphere is damaged.

“…the right hemisphere’s ability to perceive flow as a single, unified motion across time is lost [with certain right hemisphere injuries]. It becomes replaced, in the left hemisphere’s timeless, but mechanical world, by the surmising of an infinite series of static moments, rather like the succession of frames in a cine film, known as the Zeitraffer phenomenon." [5]

And…

“The fact that empathy with others grounds our experience not just of them, but of ourselves and the world, has been borne out by research in psychology in recent years.” Husserl again here, warning about replacing context and interconnectedness that is the natural activity of the right hemisphere with the logic found in the kinds of philosophy that dare to, say, compare AI favourably, to men and women!

In this book we learn that the still amazing and needed left hemisphere attributes must work with our right hemisphere’s much greater capacity for access to greater amounts of knowledge. Meditation and empathy are not just niceties, these are fundamental to Life! Mirror Neurons allow us to connect with each other in sometimes seemingly magical supernatural ways! As Hypnotherapists we comprehend how this operates and how to utilize it to relieve the pain of our clients.

If you knew already how to telepathically connect with your friend overseas, would you really be so careless about clicking ok to all those unread, and often ‘adhesive’, contracts you are coerced into daily through tech companies? For apps that help you fulfil the needs you might better fulfil elsewhere, if you knew how?

Knowledge gives you more choice. More choice gives you more Control. More Control allows you and I to access more knowledge selectively, knowledge that will help us to Co-Create our World in ways that honour and respect each other. And the crazy thing is that just like water and crystals are conductors for all kinds of spiritual modalities, we might find that we have much more at our disposal than we imagined, when we dare ask the questions that sometimes scream at us to be asked!

Ask and ye shall receive” – another one we all know.

When it comes to our Co-Creative abilities, AI is zero.  When it comes to how we can interconnect with each other on different levels of knowing, feeling and empathizing, again AI is zero. Even when it comes to data crunching, something AI does well (as long as you disregard the inbuilt mandatory compliance programs that taint its output, sometimes making it basically worthless), men and women are so much more incredibly skilled at this that we can’t even notice it, let alone know it is there operating.

What Has All of This Got to Do With Horary Astrology?

I met a man the other day and he said something to me that sounded very much like something I’ve heard many times from men who are a part of the masonic cult. I asked him if he was a member. He told me he wasn’t but that he was very eager to join. Both his grandfathers were 33rd degree masons it seems. He wanted desperately to join so that he could be told the ‘secrets’.

I didn’t ask him if he was an Astrologer because I knew he wasn’t. If he was he would never need to join a group to find the answers that the chart gives so readily, or at least leads us towards if we let it show us its mapping.

When you forget how valuable you are, your Astrology Chart reminds you.

Astrology provides us with so much knowledge about ourselves and others in our world that when we refer to Astrology, we cannot help but feel all those things spoken about by Philosophers, Psychologists and other wise men and women everywhere throughout the ages. When we read a book like McGilchrist’s book mentioned above, we discover links between evidenced experiments, and what we might otherwise consider mysterious. When our right hemisphere brings in all the information in the contexts of our lives, we then either meditate and experience this, or we might also seek to ground and comprehend it. As far as Astrology goes of course we can look to Physics for answers, and where Horary is concerned, it seems logical to suspect that what is taking place here has something to do with the way our interactions with our cosmos result in different outcomes not only because of the cosmos, but because of our relationship with it. There are many questions. I’m sure that many of you have embarked on your own choice of curiosity from your own unique perspective.

When a sincere question is asked of the Horary Chart, and the Astrologer completely comprehends the meaning of that question for the Querent, then the Chart is cast and the information is rich in confirmation and context, which can be used for many purposes.

The Horary Astrology I have now introduced into my Practice is from the Traditional Horary Astrology processes derived mostly from a 17th Century Christian Astrologer, William Lilly, and those he studied before him, and his peers. Horary, I have found, is exceptionally helpful during this time where we are purposefully bombarded by information warfare, not so much so we believe everything we hear, but moreso to confuse us, priming us better for hypnotic suggestions that continue to push us to pattern matches that lead to giving up our control to others, simply because they managed to ‘nudge’ us in that direction. Horary can save us a lot of time in this regard.

When I felt the worst in my own Life many years ago, that was when Astrology first came into my Life. There was a time I watched the Moon as she shifted one degree every two hours across my Natal Chart, and what this meant to me. Now, when times can seem so overwhelmingly pitted against our strength, Horary offers another sacred tool we can use to navigate our paths towards accessing our Basic Needs.  And of course once we access our Basic Needs we have energy and space to Co-Create our World as we never dreamed possible. I promise I believe this about you and about me. And I look forward to sharing with those of you who resonate with my work

Notes:

Edmund Husserl discussed the relationship between Psychology and Philosophy in the later 1800s.  He studied Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy prior to his work in Psychology and Philosophy. His quotes are located in McGilchrist’s work above.

Professor Ellerman’s work offers vast insights into much of what is occurring today under philosophical conclusions and consequences around Libertarian Paternalism and other notable arguments of the prevalence and acceptance of slavery today, through the argument of ‘tacit consent’ versus ‘coerciveness’.

The study of Hypnosis reveals a prolific knowledge base that was largely borne in the work of Milton Erickson a century ago.  NLP practitioners as well as Counsellors will recognize much of this but may still benefit greatly by connecting with the work of Mark Tyrrell through his Uncommon Practitioners Education hub.

Astrology now is certainly becoming one of the most popular modalities that might be considered alternative.  There are many branches of Astrology.  I am grateful I discovered the School of Traditional Astrology, where I completed more recent Astrological studies, in Horary Astrology, which is based on time-tested principles and enormous dedication of the Astrologers in this field.

Counsellor Hypnotherapist and Astrologer

Astrology introduced itself as a formidable body of knowledge to Mena in the early 90s, and still today remains a cornerstone of Mena's work.  Mena has a strong business background, which always ran concurrently with her Astrology and other metaphysical work.  Much like Astrology did, Counselling found Mena rather than the other way around, which then opened the doors to her studies and qualifications in Hypnotherapy. For Mena, the journey has truly been one of Body, Mind and Spirit demanding to be integrated.  Mena likes to think of herself as someone who has most likely made so many mistakes that there isn't much her clients can feel embarrassed about that can't be shared and moulded into a Life lived and grown through, to free up energy for more Life to be Lived!
