Neck pain

Overview

Neck pain is a frequent issue that almost everyone will experience at some point in their lives. It can result from various factors, including poor posture, muscle strain, or even stress. In most cases, neck pain is temporary and tends to improve on its own within a few days. Serious underlying conditions are rarely the cause, so most people recover without needing medical intervention[1]

Causes of Neck pain

Neck pain can arise from various factors[2]:

  • Muscle strains: Overstretching or tearing of muscle fibres, often from physical activity or sudden movements.
  • Worn joint: Degeneration in the joints, broken down cartilage, usually due to ageing or repetitive use.
  • Nerve compression: Pressure on a nerve, often caused by herniated discs or other spinal issues, leading to pain or numbness.
  • Injuries: Physical damage to tissues or bones from accidents, falls, or impacts that can cause pain and limited movement.
  • Diseases: Medical conditions, such as arthritis or infections, that affect the muscles, joints, or nerves, causing discomfort or dysfunction.

Signs of Neck pain

Neck pain can often present with a range of symptoms[3]:

  • Headaches and neck weakness: Pain in the head coupled with reduced strength or discomfort in the neck area.
  • Limited head movement: Difficulty turning or tilting the head, often accompanied by pain.
  • Muscle stiffness: Tension and tightness in the neck, upper back, shoulders, and arms.
  • Numbness or tingling: Sensory disturbances like tingling or a lack of feeling in the arms or shoulders.
  • Walking difficulties: Trouble maintaining balance or walking steadily.
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control: Inability to control urination or bowel movements.

Neck pain and TCIH Approaches

In addition to conventional treatments, several complementary therapies can support the healing process and help manage neck pain more effectively:

  • Acupressure: Acupressure has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for neck pain. By targeting specific pressure points on the body, acupressure helps stimulate the flow of energy and promotes relaxation, reducing muscle tension and alleviating pain[4]
  • Myofascial release therapy: Myofascial release therapy can be highly effective for relieving chronic neck pain, especially for individuals also dealing with depression. It helps reduce pain intensity and improve mobility. Incorporating myofascial release into treatment plans can provide significant relief and enhance overall well-being[5]

  • Shiatsu: Shiatsu self-massage can be a helpful technique for relieving neck pain by applying pressure to specific points along the body’s energy pathways. This method encourages the flow of energy, relaxes tense muscles, and promotes circulation, which can reduce stiffness and discomfort in the neck[6]
