...massage nourish you?
Swedish massage is a type of massage that uses long, soft, kneading strokes[1] applied to the superficial muscles, combined with rhythmic tapping and movement of the joints. This offers both a relaxing and energising massage experience[2].
Often confused with other massage techniques such as deep tissue, Swedish massage is unique in that it is applied to the topmost layer of the muscles. As such, it is a gentler massage therapy that is designed for relaxation and tension relief[3].
True to its name, Swedish massage was developed in Sweden[4] in the 1830s by Pehr Hendrik Ling[5]. This therapy has since become one of the most popular forms of massage today and is commonly used as a basis for classical Western massage.
It is important to choose a massage therapist who is registered with a professional association to ensure the highest standard of treatment. These include Massage & Myotherapy Australia[6], Massage Association of Australia[7] and the Association of Massage Therapists[8]. Members who are registered with these peak bodies are required to have appropriate qualifications, undertake continuous professional development and commit to upholding excellence in practice. Benefits of Swedish massage
The purpose of Swedish massage is to enhance the general health and well-being[9] of the individual. As such, it is proposed to offer numerous benefits for relaxation and pain relief, while simultaneously improving circulation and energising the body.
There is evidence from a literature review that Swedish massage may be effective in relieving chronic lower back pain[10]. There were other reported benefits from this review, including improvements in physical disability and range of motion, as well as reduced anxiety and enhanced mood.
In addition to the physical benefits of Swedish massage, there are many suggested psychological benefits. It is proposed that some mental health conditions, such as Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)[11], may benefit from Swedish massage. This is further supported by an intervention study reporting Swedish massage may offer improvement for mood disorders[12], such as anxiety and depression, in women with breast cancer.

A traditional Swedish massage will involve a full-body treatment that can vary in length, depending on your personal preference.
Before your session begins, your therapist may discuss any areas of concern that you would like them to spend more time on. It is also important to mention your preferred level of pressure.
You will then be asked to lie on a massage table on either your back or your stomach. You will be requested to turn over at the halfway point. Your massage therapist will drape a towel or a sheet over your body, adjusting it as they work around the different parts of your body.
There are five basic strokes[13], all flowing toward the heart, that are typically used to manipulate the soft tissues. These include effleurage (long, gentle strokes across the skin), friction (short, fast strokes that create heat), petrissage (squeezing techniques), vibration (rapid, superficial movements of the fingers or palms), and tapotement (strikes or “karate chops”).
Keep in mind that it is always advisable to consult a qualified health professional before commencing any wellness journey. If you have an injury or an underlying health issue, speak to your massage therapist, who will be happy to address these concerns and personalise the therapy session to your individual requirements.

Rooted in an ancient mind-body medical practice[1], traditional Tibetan massage is considered an integral component of Tibetan Medicine, used for centuries in both the prevention and treatment of disease[2].
As one of the world’s oldest traditional healing practices, Tibetan Medicine follows a holistic system[3] that integrates the needs of the body and mind. It is based on the premise that health is achieved by maintaining the balance of our five basic elements: earth, water, fire, wind and space. When there is imbalance, there is ill-health[4].
The four pillars of treatment within Tibetan Medicine incorporate diet, lifestyle, medicines and external therapies[5]. Tibetan massage is regarded as one of the most important external therapies and is primarily focused on bringing the wind element back into balance.
Ku Nye (‘Ku’ meaning oil and ‘Nye’ meaning to perform massage)[6] is an alternate name for Tibetan massage that incorporates specific herbal oils into massage therapy, focusing on acupressure points and meridians[7]. Many of the techniques used in Tibetan massage show similarities to therapies such as reflexology, acupressure and remedial massage[8]. Benefits of traditional Tibetan massage
Traditional Tibetan massage offers far-reaching benefits beyond just a physical therapy.
By supporting the rebalancing of the body[9], relaxing tension and restoring equilibrium to the body’s energy systems, Tibetan massage is reputed to improve general health, strengthen the body’s innate ability to prevent illness and enhance longevity. It may be used as a stand-alone treatment, or in conjunction with other therapies.
Individuals who have experienced Tibetan massage have reported improvements in their general health and well-being, including boosted energy levels, improved digestion, better quality sleep and improved mood.

True to its meaning - “ointment rub” - a Ku Nye session is usually divided into the following three basic stages: applying oil, massaging the oil into the body, and removing the oil from the body.
During the first stage, known as ‘Ku,’ the practitioner generously applies herbal-infused oils to the body. These oils are specifically selected according to an individual’s constitution and/or symptoms, and may include natural products such as butter, olive oil or sesame oil. The purpose of the oil is to act as a lubricant, as well assist in securing the wind element in place.
The practitioner will then perform manual and deep tissue work using various techniques, such as pressure and rotation, identifying and stimulating specific points on the body. This stage is known as ‘Nye.’ Like acupuncture, there are 250 points on the body that a practitioner may choose to focus on. Other types of gentle therapies, such as tapping, hot and cold compress, or cupping may also be used to enhance the treatment. The final stage, ‘Chi,’ concludes the session with removal of the excess oil from the body.
To gain the maximum benefit from your Tibetan massage, it is recommended that you do not eat a large meal before treatment and avoid exposing your body to cold temperatures both before and after the massage. Taking a cold shower, for example, is not recommended.
Keep in mind that it is always advisable to consult a qualified health professional before commencing any wellness journey. This particular therapy may not be suitable for individuals who suffer from infectious or inflammatory conditions, liver and gallbladder disorders or severe water retention. It is therefore also recommended that you discuss any health concerns with your practitioner prior to receiving treatment. Ancient massage...

Rooted in ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Chinese massage is a form of bodywork that has been used as a healing tool for centuries[1].
Tui Na, meaning to ‘push’ and ‘grasp[2],’ is a popular form[3] of Chinese massage that uses rhythmic compression techniques along the energy channels of the body[4], or ‘meridians,’ to ease muscle tension and lubricate the joints. This is done to promote balance and harmony in the body.
Much like acupuncture or acupressure therapies also used in TCM, the main objective of Chinese massage is to apply pressure to acupoints[5], meridians and muscles to remove the blockages that obstruct the flow of ‘Qi,’ the body’s life force or energy. When Qi is not in balance, there is ill-health or disease.
Chinese massage practitioners are trained to identify the pathways with limited flow[6]. As such, manipulation techniques are performed to remove these blockages and restore health and vitality back to the body.
In Australia, to provide therapeutic massage according to the Traditional Chinese Medicine remedial massage framework, a one-year Diploma of Traditional Chinese Medicine Remedial Massage[7] is required. This qualification is necessary for accreditation with associations such as the Australian Natural Therapists Association (ANTA)[8].
The peak national organisation in Australia for Chinese medicine practitioners, including traditional Chinese massage therapists, is the Australian Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine Association (AACMA)[9]. Members affiliated with this organisation are required to abide by their professional standards of conduct and practice guidelines. Benefits of Chinese massage
Chinese massage is designed to work on the body as a whole and may aid in the treatment of both external musculoskeletal conditions, as well as the balancing of internal health. The suggested benefits therefore include physical pain relief[10], as well as supported emotional health[11].
In a large systematic review, it was suggested that Chinese massage may be beneficial in the treatment of lumbar disc herniation[12], a common spinal disorder associated with low back pain.
There is also clinical evidence to support the view that Chinese massage may be effective in decreasing knee pain and improving muscle strength[13]. Moreover, Chinese massage has been shown to improve joint mobility and range of motion[14], as well as reducing inflammation after exercise.

A Chinese massage will typically last between 30 minutes and one hour. Your Chinese massage practitioner may incorporate traditional techniques such as[15] brushing, kneading, rolling, holding and pressing to manipulate your energy channels.
Hand pressure is therefore applied in various ways to target areas between joints, muscles, tendons and ligaments, along meridians and at specific acupoints. Both passive and active range of motion and traction techniques may also be used, and these will vary according to your individual requirements.
If you are not used to regular massage, you may find the pressure applied in Chinese massage to be fairly strong. This is because Chinese massage is generally not used for pleasure or relaxation[16], but to address imbalance and disharmony in the body.
As with any exercise or wellness program, please consult your medical professional before commencing Chinese massage. Although some people turn to Chinese massage as a path towards restoring health, it should never be used as a replacement for conventional medicine. If you have an injury or other health issue, or any concerns at all, also speak to your Chinese massage practitioner, who will be happy to address these and personalise the session to your individual requirements.

Traditional Thai massage (TTM) is a deep, full-body treatment that combines pressure techniques and stretching or rocking manoeuvres[1], often starting at the feet and progressing up to the head. It aims to enrich both the body and soul by strengthening the muscles, restoring energy, and relaxing the mind and body.
TTM has been practised for over 2500 years[2] and was influenced by the healing systems found in China, India and Southeast Asia[3]. These origins make it one with deep spiritual roots, in addition to physical therapy. Some academics believe a key element of TTM is borne from the Buddhist healing principle of “giving from two hands and the heart[4]”, which involves the therapist focusing energies in their hands and sending loving-kindness or compassion from their heart to the other person.
The focus of TTM is on creating harmony and balance[5] in the body, which is achieved by focusing the massage along the ten main ‘sen’ (or energy) lines through which the body’s life force flows. It is believed that the pressing and massaging along these sen lines removes energy blockages[6], eliminates pain and restores normal tissue mobility[7].
To ensure you receive the highest standard of treatment, choose a practitioner registered with a professional association such as Massage & Myotherapy Australia[8]. This national organisation is committed to upholding excellence in practice, accepting only massage therapists with formal qualifications and requiring its members to abide by its code of ethics. Benefits of traditional Thai massage
Well-known benefits include lowered stress levels and increased blood circulation.[9] Research into the clinical effectiveness of TTM is continuing worldwide although it has been reported to assist with chronic back pain, which is a leading cause of disability worldwide[10]. Studies also suggest it can be as effective as joint mobilisation [11]in bringing about short-term reduction in lower back pain.
A clinical study found that administering traditional Thai Massage to basketball players[12] during match breaks decreased anxiety, increased mental clarity and the movement and elasticity in athletes’ joints and muscles – leading to improved performance in the second half of the game.
The physical effects of TTM have also been shown to positively impact the walking ability of those with knee osteoarthritis; and increase upper limb muscle strength in patients with Parkinson’s disease[13]. There is also evidence to show it may provide psychological benefits for people experiencing depression[14] by causing a reduction in their heart rate and anxiety.

Before a session begins, a qualified therapist should ask you questions about your health history and obtain your informed consent[15] to the treatment. You should also inform your therapist of any injuries or areas that cause you concern. To prepare for the session, you are likely to be asked to wear or change into comfortable clothing to aid movement during the massage.
A session generally lasts between an hour or two, and is often performed in a quiet and meditative environment[16] to allow you to fully relax. Unlike other forms of massage such as remedial massage, TTM is often performed on the floor, with you actively participating in the massage[17] to facilitate the stretching. Therapists may also use ‘the hands, elbows, knees and feet in unique and innovative ways’ during the massage to achieve the desired effect.
Traditional Thai massage differs from other massage techniques in that oil is not usually applied[18], except to heal certain conditions such as muscle trauma. You may also be offered the option to have heat applied, for example through sauna treatment or herbal compresses, as the application of heat is believed to aid blood flow[19] to any affected areas.
As with any exercise or wellness program, please consult your medical professional before commencing traditional Thai massage. If you have an injury, health issue, or any concerns at all, do advise your therapist who will be happy to address these and make sure the session is personalised to your individual requirements. Created by movement-based therapist Gwyn Williams[1] in 2001, Zenthai Shiatsu[2] massage is now widely recognised as an effective structural and energetic form of therapy. He describes it as “focused intention” therapy that allows the natural healing methods of the body to flow again, bringing vitality.
A structural and energetic form of therapy, this style of massage addresses issues of the musculoskeletal, digestive and nervous systems.
The three elements it draws from are:
Zen shiatsu - from Traditional Chinese medicine, including acupuncture techniques without needles such as cupping, moxibustion and lifestyle advice.
Traditional Thai massage - releases muscular tension and energetic blockages.
Osteopathic techniques - including joint mobilisation, connective tissue patterns and fascia unwinding.
Zenthai bodywork has also evolved into a fluid, movement-based practice known as Zenthai Flow[3] that reflects “a state of trust, curiously exploring and fully engaging in the moment “.
The majority of Zenthai shiatsu massage therapists[4] in Australia are listed on Gywn’s website. Since 2001, he has trained more than 400 people in the practice. Benefits of Zenthai shiatsu massage
Common conditions this form of bodywork helps with include lower back, neck and shoulder pain; digestive complaints; joint mobilisation; energy depletion and the immune system.
Zenthai shiatsu massage may also assist in relieving symptoms related to: What to expect from a Zenthai shiatsu massage session
Before a session begins, you should inform your therapist of any injuries or areas that cause you concern. Wear loose, comfortable clothing.
In Zenthai Shiatsu, the whole being is treated[5] not just the presenting symptom – this aids the practitioner to balance the strengths and weaknesses that present themselves, such as aches and pains, digestive or hormonal issues, sleeping or breathing difficulties as well as a wide range of emotional and mental issues.
The session generally lasts for 90 minutes and takes place on a padded mat on the floor, with support pillows as aids for different positions.
A combination of acupressure massage, Thai flowing massage techniques, wholefood dietary advice, Qi yoga correctives and moxibustion are used in the session.
Shiatsu translates as ‘finger pressure’ although the practitioner will use thumbs, fingers, palms, elbows, knees and feet to apply their own body weight to stimulate the patient’s flow of energy in their body.
As with any exercise or wellness program, please consult your medical professional before commencing Zenthai shiatsu massage. If you have an injury, health issue, or any concerns at all, do advise your therapist who will be happy to address these and make sure the session is personalised to your individual requirements.

Deep tissue massage is a branch of massage therapy that targets the deeper layers of muscle[1] and the surrounding connective tissue. Using a combination of slow strokes and friction techniques, robust pressure is applied to muscles throughout the body[2] to release chronic patterns of tension[3].
Deep tissue massage is differentiated from other types of massage in that it is slower, firmer and less rhythmic. As such, Deep tissue massage is not intended for relaxation[4], but rather to ‘unstick’ the muscle fibres and remove any knots or adhesions that are causing pain and discomfort. Unlike remedial massage, deep tissue massage is a whole-body treatment, and does not target a specific condition or injury.
Regarded as one of the oldest health care practices, the history of massage dates back thousands of years[5]. Written records suggest that there were ancient cultures, such as the Chinese and Egyptians, who held a strong belief in the health-promoting properties of massage. Today, massage is a highly respected healing modality and is a popular therapy of choice in countries around the world.
In Australia, deep tissue massage may be provided as a standalone treatment by accredited massage therapists. Health care professionals, such as myotherapists, may also incorporate deep tissue massage into their therapy sessions.
It is important to choose a massage therapist who is registered with a professional association to ensure the highest standard of treatment. These include Massage & Myotherapy Australia[6], Massage Association of Australia[7] and the Association of Massage Therapists[8]. Members who are registered with these peak bodies are required to be suitably qualified, undertake continuous professional development and commit to upholding excellence in practice. Benefits of deep tissue massage
Deep tissue massage may benefit anyone who experiences general feelings of stiffness or tightness in the body, or for those who simply want a massage with firm pressure. It has also been shown to be beneficial for a number of physical ailments.
In a randomised pilot study, it has been shown that deep tissue massage may reduce symptoms of lower back pain[9] in people with Ankylosing Spondylitis. While further research was recommended, deep tissue massage may be considered a potential therapeutic option for this severe inflammatory condition affecting the spine.
The benefits of deep tissue massage are further supported by a study that reported positive outcomes for individuals suffering chronic lower back pain. Moreover, authors reported that the pain-reducing effects may be equivalent to using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory[10] medication.
Findings from a recently published study suggested that deep tissue massage alone or in combination with other strengthening and stretching exercises may be a beneficial short to mid-term treatment for individuals suffering from persistent neck pain[11].

Before your massage begins, your therapist may discuss where you feel pain or discomfort in your body. The next step of treatment will involve preparing your muscles by applying oil and light pressure, followed by the use of specific techniques.
Using techniques such as stripping and friction, your therapist will apply pressure at varying intensities to your muscles. Stripping techniques create a gliding sensation over the length of the muscle fibres, and friction techniques apply pressure across the grain to release the adhesions.
Since deep tissue massage is intended to break up the muscle tension and scar tissue, you may feel slight discomfort during your therapy. It is also not unusual to experience stiffness in the few days following your treatment. As such, it is important to keep open lines of communication with your therapist if you feel any sensation that is too uncomfortable. Drinking water prior to your session is also recommended.
Keep in mind that it is always advisable to consult a qualified health professional before commencing any wellness journey. If you have an injury or an underlying health issue, speak to your deep tissue massage...

Remedial massage involves the manipulation of soft tissues[1] to restore normal health and function to areas of the body that are tense, damaged or in pain. Pain in the body may be due to injuries, repetitive movements or imbalances in the body, which could injure the musculoskeletal system over time[2].
As a tailored modality, therapists may employ a range of techniques such as deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy[3] or myofascial release techniques to assist you. This variety of techniques makes it useful for issues ranging from poor posture to occupational injuries[4].
Remedial massage stems from a Western philosophical base[5], with practitioners trained in human anatomy and physiology[6]. Unlike oriental systems of massage that aim to encourage the flow of energy in the body, therapists often apply deep pressure or direct application of a technique[7] to affected and related muscles, tendons and ligaments.
To ensure you receive the highest standard of treatment, choose a therapist registered with a professional association such as Massage & Myotherapy Australia[8], Massage Association of Australia[9] or the Association of Massage Therapists[10]. These national organisations are committed to upholding excellence in practice, and require its members to undertake continuing professional development. Benefits of remedial massage
Even with remedial massage encompassing a wide variety of techniques, practitioners widely agree that it assists in rehabilitation, pain and injury management[11]. Some other major benefits[12] include improved joint mobility, an increased sense of relaxation and reduced depression and anxiety. A literature review of complementary approaches found that massage therapy may provide cancer survivors with improvements[13] in physical symptoms such as pain and fatigue, and mental symptoms such as anger, depression and stress.
Clinical studies have also been conducted into various techniques that are used in remedial massage. For instance, deep tissue massage is reported to reduce pain and improve the perception of recovery for those with chronic neck pain[14], while case studies found that trigger point therapy may reduce the frequency of tension headaches[15]. Both these techniques target the deeper layers of muscle and surrounding connective tissues[16], and can be beneficial for conditions such as lower back pain, osteoarthritis, and tennis elbow.
There is even research to show that remedial massage may benefit non-musculoskeletal conditions such as gastro-intestinal disorders. A clinical trial of 122 children conducted over two years found that remedial massage to the psoas muscle[17] (an important, large muscle wrapping around your back and legs) resolved all symptoms of abdominal pain, vomiting and nausea[18] in 92% of children after treatment. Over half of these children remained symptom-free two years later. These findings may also be relevant for adults, as this study came about due to a therapist reporting anecdotal evidence of improved gastrointestinal symptoms in adults when tightness in their psoas muscles was resolved.
Remedial massage may assist in relieving symptoms related to: What to expect from a remedial massage session
Given the range of conditions remedial massage can assist with, it is important that you do research to find a therapist with relevant expertise. At your first session, your therapist will ask questions about your health, lifestyle[19] and obtain information about any areas of concern or discomfort. The therapist should then conduct assessments that test your posture and range of motion[20] to gain a proper understanding of how to treat your condition.
You may be asked to remove some clothing as part of the session, but only do so if you feel comfortable. Qualified therapists who are part of a professional association should always give you privacy while changing, and provide draping[21] to cover any area that is not being treated. Your therapist wants to make sure you are comfortable, so don’t be afraid to communicate with them throughout the session, for instance if they are applying more pressure than you wish.
After the session, you may feel calm and relaxed, or you may experience some stiffness or muscle soreness[22]. This is particularly if your therapist has used techniques such as deep tissue massage, or if you have had an injury or tension for some time[23]. This is entirely normal, but if the pain does not fade you should contact your therapist to discuss it.
As with any exercise or wellness program, please consult your medical professional before commencing remedial massage...

Sports massage is a branch of massage therapy that is designed specifically for athletes[1]. Unlike other types of massage, Sports massage is not intended for relaxation. Instead, strenuous techniques are used to stretch tight muscles and reduce the stress and tension that builds up in the tissue during exercise.
Sports massage is suitable for assisting with minor sporting injuries, to treat muscle soreness, increase flexibility and prevent injury. These may be performed pre, during or post exercise, and are tailored for specific sporting disciplines, injuries or conditions[2].
The history of sports massage dates back to the times of ancient Greeks and Romans[3], who believed in the benefit of massage therapy for exercise. Roman physician, Galen (AD 30 – 200)[4], was known to prescribe massage for gladiators both before and after exercise. Today, sports massage is a popular choice for sporting professionals, and is widely used by athletes in elite sporting competitions around the world[5].
In Australia, sports massage may be provided by sports physiotherapists[6], sports osteopaths[7] or by sports massage therapists who have completed courses in sports massage.
It is important to choose a therapist who is registered with a professional association to ensure the highest standard of treatment. These include Massage & Myotherapy Australia[8], Massage Association of Australia[9] and the Association of Massage Therapists[10]. Sports physiotherapists may also be registered with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia[11], which is regulated by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). Members who are registered with these peak bodies are required to undertake continuous professional development and commit to upholding excellence in practice. Benefits of sports massage
The overarching purpose of this therapy is to prevent and treat sports-related conditions. As such, sports massage may be of benefit to both amateur and elite athletes alike.
In a systematic review evaluating the effects of massage after strenuous exercise, it was reported that massage therapy may be effective for improving the delayed onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) and muscle performance[12]. This is further supported by a large meta-analysis that confirms the beneficial effects of massage in improving DOMS as well as flexibility[13].
There is also evidence to suggest that massage therapy may be beneficial for recovery after exercise, rehabilitation following injury, and preparing athletes for performance.
Additional studies have reported that massage therapy may improve shoulder range of motion[14], as well as reduce muscle pain in the quadriceps of runners[15].
Sports massage may assist in alleviating symptoms that relate to: What to expect from a sports massage session
A collection of different massage techniques may be used by a sports massage therapist. These may include techniques such as effleurage (sliding, circular movements), petrissage (kneading and pressure techniques), tapotement (repetitive striking movements), friction (stroking in circular or linear motions) and vibration (shaking).
The specific combination of techniques used will provide different results. As such, your massage therapy session will provide you with individualised benefits[16] that are dependent on your athletic needs. Your session will therefore differ depending on whether you are seeking a pre or post exercise treatment.
If you require a pre-exercise sports massage, your therapist may use techniques that activate the muscles and prepare your body for the upcoming activity. A pre-exercise massage will typically be done 30 minutes to two hours before the event.
In contrast, if you require treatment post exercise, your therapist may use techniques that increase blood flow, decrease inflammation and aid in muscle recovery.
Keep in mind that it is always advisable to consult a qualified health professional before commencing any wellness journey. If you have an injury or an underlying health issue, speak to your sports massage...
...massage is offered with the spirit of Aloha[1], or love, peace and respect. Lomi[2] means masseur and also "to rub, press, squeeze or massage”.
Also known as Kahuna bodywork[3] or loving hands massage, this full-body flowing massage employs long, deep, rhythmic touch in rhythm with respiration. Lomi Lomi is similar to Swedish massage with an added meditative element. The Lomi Lomi therapist integrates the client with music, centering breath and sweeping strokes. Lomi Lomi can relax the receiver into a deep delta brain-wave state for mental, physical and spiritual healing.
Lomi Lomi is an indigenous Polynesian practice that spread to Hawaii with the early settlers, and Auntie Margaret Machado[4] is believed to be the first Hawaiian to teach Lomi Lomi to non-Islanders. It encompasses many styles and schools, and differs according to the teacher and location. Other Lomi Lomi variations include those taught by Abraham Kawai’i[5], Mana Lomi®,[6] and Sacred Lomi Hawaiian Temple Bodywork.[7]
In Australia, to ensure the highest standard of treatment select a Lomi Lomi practitioner who is accredited in a bodywork modality with associations such as IICT[8], ATMS[9], MAA[10] or The Kahuna Training Guild of Australia[11]. These national organisations are committed to upholding excellence in practice, and require its members to undertake continuing professional development. Benefits of Lomi Lomi
Lomi Lomi provides the physical benefits of massage with additional mental and spiritual effects[12]. According to the Acupuncture Massage College[13], Lomi Lomi is reported to increase range of motion and flexibility, lower blood pressure, slow heart rate, improve posture and accelerate healing[14].
Lomi Lomi is also believed to activate ‘Mana’, or life-force energy and clear negative emotions. The long strokes used in Lomi Lomi make it particularly beneficial for supporting the immune response and promoting blood flow[15], which may aid in the detoxification and stimulation of the lymphatic system.
According to the American Massage Therapy Association, these flowing strokes are suited to supporting women during pregnancy and labour.[16] Lomi Lomi can also encourage relaxation, as the stretching produces a gentle myofascial release.
Lomi Lomi may assist in relieving symptoms related to: What to expect from a Lomi Lomi session
A Lomi Lomi session can take one to three hours. Before a session starts, a qualified therapist should ask you questions about your health history and obtain your informed consent[17]. You should also advise your therapist of any injuries or areas that cause you concern.
It’s a good idea to have a little water and use the bathroom before a session. To prepare for the treatment, the therapist will give you privacy to remove clothing if pertinent, but do let them know if you’re uncomfortable with certain areas being uncovered or touched.
Lomi Lomi considers the client to be vulnerable during a massage, and an initial prayer is often chanted to create a caring connection and a sacred space at the commencement and close of the session. The therapist typically then places their hands on you for a few moments to calm and centre. You may be asked to breathe deeply and relax.
The therapist provides draping[17] with a sarong, sheet or towels, or may offer sessions where you are fully clothed. In a dynamic, rhythmic dance, oil is generally applied with long, integrating strokes to the whole body. They may also use gentle stretches, joint rotations and focussed pressure. Lomi Lomi practitioners may use various parts of the arms and legs for massage, as well as sticks and stones.
Traditional Lomi Lomi always includes abdominal massage because Hawaiian tradition considers the colon to be very important. Occasionally, the therapist may hum or sing[18] to amplify energy and promote the release of blockages in the body. Lomi Lomi practitioners may also ask their clients to alter their diets and engage in other self-help activities.
As with any exercise or wellness program, please consult your medical professional before commencing Lomi Lomi. If you have any concerns at all, also speak to your Lomi Lomi therapist, who will be happy to address these and evaluate whether Lomi Lomi is a suitable treatment for you.
Soothing holistic massage...

Hot stone massage is a variation of Swedish massage[1] that involves the use of smooth, heated stones during the therapy. Typically using a type of volcanic rock, called basalt[2], the massage therapist will either place the hot stones on specific parts of the body or move them while performing the massage. The purpose of the localised heat and weight from the stones is to warm and relax the muscles[3] . This enhances the therapeutic effects of manipulation[4] by the therapist.
Hot stone massage is believed to have its roots in a number of ancient health traditions[5]. Many believe that this therapy originated from India’s holistic health system, “Ayurveda,” where smooth stones were collected from riverbeds and used in healing and massage.
Ancient Japanese and Chinese practices have also used warm stones to improve the functioning of internal organ systems. Similarly, in Native America and Hawaii[6], healing practices involving hot stones have been used for many years.
Modern day hot stone massage therapy was ‘re-discovered’ in 1993 by a massage therapist named Mary Nelson. It has since become a popular style of therapy that is used practice around the world.
Choosing a qualified practitioner who is registered with a professional association, such as Massage & Myotherapy Australia[7], is important to ensure the highest standard of treatment. All massage practitioners who are members of this national organisation have formal qualifications and are obliged to adhere to a Code of Ethics. Benefits of hot stone massage
A wider evidence base is needed on the clinical benefits of hot stone massage, although one study involving patients with kidney failure has shown that this therapy may assist in improving sleep quality[8].
There is also evidence to suggest that both heat and pressure, the two techniques used in hot stone massage, may offer both therapeutic and restorative benefits for the body[9].
One meta-analysis has shown that massage therapy may be an effective treatment[10] option for pain and may assist in improving anxiety and health-related quality of life. Moreover, it has also been suggested to reduce stress and promote mental health[11].
Heat therapy[12] is another widely accepted technique that may assist in decreasing joint stiffness, reducing pain, relieving muscle spasms and assist in healing by increasing blood flow to the affected area.
Hot stone massage may assist in relieving symptoms related to: What to expect from a hot stone massage session
A hot stone massage typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. The therapist will heat the stones to a therapeutic temperature prior to your treatment. These will then be placed on the specific parts of your body, providing a targeted release of specific muscles.[13] Massage oils will also be applied to your skin, and the therapist may apply Swedish massage techniques[14] such as kneading, long, flowing strokes or deep circular motions, to the different parts of the body.
To get the most benefit from your massage, it is recommended that you refrain from eating prior to your session and stay hydrated by drinking both before and after your massage. During your session, maintain open lines of communication with your therapist and let them know if the temperature of the stones is uncomfortable or the pressure of the massage is too intense.
Hot stone massage is generally considered safe when performed by a trained and licensed massage therapist.
As with any exercise or wellness program, please consult your medical professional before commencing hot stone massage...
