Merv Neal is the CEO of Laughter Yoga Australia and a living example of the mantra “laughter is the best medicine”. After a successful career as a multi-millionaire businessman, a scary health diagnosis of a rare disease changed everything. By incorporating daily laughter into his rehabilitation program, he overcame his health issues and decided to explore more about laughter and why it made him well again. After making contact with Dr Madan Kataria, the founder of Laughter Yoga and the “Guru of Giggling”, Merv booked a flight to Mumbai to meet him and was invited to the 2005 International Laughter Conference. He was encouraged to participate in a laughing competition and, while initially hesitant, he took Dr Kataria’s advice to “laugh from the heart”. By doing so, Merv was ultimately awarded the “Best International Laughing Man” out of 1000 people! Merv has been a laughter therapist and holistic health practitioner since 2002, founded Laughter Yoga Australia in 2005, runs the Melbourne Laughter Club, and is Australia’s leading gelotologist and laughing expert. While there is no such thing as a “typical day” when you work in laughter yoga, you can often find him presenting keynotes at conferences as a professional speaker, conducting research studies with Deakin University and Monash Health, and facilitating workshops for commercial and community organisations. Merv is passionate about sharing the positive impact that Laughter Yoga has on everyone and that it really does work. Through his company Laughter Yoga Australia, important research has been undertaken demonstrating the multitude health benefits of laughter yoga. One of Merv’s greatest success stories is being acknowledged as a medically published author for his research study in laughter yoga into Monash Health’s kidney dialysis unit, where he ran 30 minute laughter yoga sessions three times a week over four weeks and the incredible impact this had on their patients! Merv is based in Melbourne and travels all over Australia and internationally. Find out more about Merv at [***] or [***] Read more
