Samantha is a senior registered yoga teacher with Yoga Australia and a yoga therapist with more than 15 years experience, who believes in the power of yoga to transform people inside and out. She has witnessed her clients becoming calmer, more confident, stronger within themselves and better able to deal with life. One woman who came to see Sam walked in with the weight of the world on her shoulders. She had recently recovered from drug addiction, domestic violence and cancer and now walks with an upright, strong and open posture and happier disposition. Witnessing these types of transformations in peoples’ lives is rewarding, fulfilling and never ceases to amaze Samantha. First taking up yoga in 1999 to help her chronic back pain, Samantha decided to become a yoga teacher some years later, when she was inspired by the fit and healthy appearance of older women who practiced it. However after doing 1000 hours training, it was the internal change - not the external - that had the greatest impact on her. Samantha recognised that many of her reactions in her life had come as a result of a traumatic upbringing. She found that yoga helped her come to terms with this trauma and believes it can resolve issues like anxiety, depression, stress and grief. Yoga keeps her sane and helps her accept whatever life has to offer. Having worked with the Yoga Foundation for five years and GROW for three years, teaching yoga for mental health, Samantha is very skilled in the benefits of yoga for wellbeing and recovery, but her special interest is in yoga for children. Here she believes that by helping children to help themselves with yoga, they will grow into healthy self-regulating adults who don’t need to recover from their childhoods. Samantha is developing a pack of 54 yoga cards for adolescents/teens that can be used by kids’ yoga teachers, school teachers and parents. Each card shows a number of different yoga poses, breathing techniques and meditations aligned to earth, water, fire or air and aims to address a specific emotion, teaching children how to self-regulate their emotions. These cards are to be released to the public market soon. Read more
